How to (truly) unlock Apple Store Movie purchases for 4K streaming vs. HD/SD

Issue Summary:

Purchased movies and TV shows from Apple TV store (including those bought before 4K was available) fail to stream in 4K quality despite showing 4K availability badges. The Apple TV app shows 4K badges on content pages but delivers lower quality (SD/HD) streams.

Reproduced in these Environments:

  • Apple TV 4K (latest tvOS)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max (latest iOS)
  • MacBook Pro 16" M3 Pro (latest macOS)
  • MacBook Air M2 (latest macOS)
  • iPad Pro M2 (latest iPadOS)
  • LG TV with Apple TV app

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Navigate to a previously purchased movie/show that displays a 4K badge
  2. Verify no "Purchase in 4K" option is available
  3. Begin streaming content
  4. Check stream quality via INFO button during playback
  5. Observe that 4K badge is missing during actual playback
  6. Return to store/movie page to confirm 4K badge reappears

Evidence of Store/Streaming Issue:

  • Issue persists across multiple UI navigation paths (store page, library, 4K HDR section)
  • Some 4K-badged content (e.g., "The Godfather") consistently streams in SD/HD
  • Certain purchases don't appear in 4K HDR library section despite showing 4K badges in store
  • Other 4K content streams properly, ruling out bandwidth/server load issues

Issue persists after:

  • Clearing device caches
  • Removing local downloads
  • Device restarts
  • Multiple UI navigation attempts

Suspected Root Cause:

Purchase Database Architecture:

  • Historic purchase metadata retains original quality settings
  • Database doesn't update when higher resolutions become available
  • No automatic quality upgrade path for legacy purchases

UI/Backend Disconnect:

  • Store UI likely queries global content database for badges/information
  • Streaming quality determined by original purchase quality
  • No validation between displayed badges and actual streaming entitlements

Database Query Logic:

  • UI displays highest available quality badge from store
  • Streaming service queries original purchase quality
  • No reconciliation between displayed vs. available quality

Business Impact:

Customer Experience:

  • Users unable to utilize high-end displays (Apple Studio Display, Pro Display XDR)
  • Inconsistent experience between UI promises and actual streaming quality
  • Particularly noticeable on larger displays and remastered classic films

Revenue Impacts for Apple:

  • Lost upgrade revenue from users willing to pay for quality improvements
  • Potential impact on hardware sales (displays, Apple TV 4K)
  • Customer dissatisfaction with premium content experience

Future Implications/Risks:

  • Problem will compound with 8K adoption
  • Affects value proposition of premium hardware purchases
  • May impact customer trust in Apple's content ecosystem

Suggested Solution(s):

  • Implement purchase database modernization
  • Create upgrade path for legacy purchases
  • Align UI quality indicators with actual streaming entitlements
  • Consider global quality upgrade program for affected content

Technical Notes:

  • Issue appears independent of Movies Anywhere integration
  • Problem persists across all Apple platforms
  • Not related to localized content versions
  • Server load optimization unlikely primary cause given selective nature of issue

4K playback requires screen of at least 3840×2160px natively. iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro have smaller resolution screens, thus would fall back to lower resolution streams on their built-in screens.

Local downloads for 4K purchases from the iTunes Store would not be in 4K, but in 1080p HD (or lower, depending on app settings).

Apple TV 4K and 4K smart TVs with the Apple TV app would display 4K content in 4K, with the appropriate settings and hardware. The 4K badge in the store of the app would signify that a 4K edition is available to you. This may differ from Store listings for users in other countries. The Store listing would show “Play” instead or “Buy”/“Rent” if this is a title (edition) that you have purchased.

SD purchases will not be upgraded to HD or 4K.

HD purchases from the iTunes Store will be auto-upgraded, when the supplying studio offers a 4K version of the same instance in the Store. HD and 4K then are the same store item.

HD purchases from a reciprocal service will not be auto-upgraded by Apple.

4K purchases can also be played back in 1080p HD, 720p HD, or SD, when configured accordingly.

And just to be clear, yes I've already ruled out availability (via the steps outlined here) of quality and/or local downloaded versions of the media.

I understand that if you download a version of the movie or episode, you'll only get an HD or SD version, that the only way to achieve 4K is to stream the media.

I continue to encounter these issues after first deleting downloaded versions of the media, even re-starting the devices, clearing caches, etc.
