Keyboard backlight settings missing on MacBook Pro?

Appears that this happens when the Mac can not detect the ambient light sensor (which is in the camera cluster at top of screen). People using a "headless" Mac (a MacBook Pro with screen removed) encounter this problem. I am attempting to purchase the sensor with wires and connector and will see if once attached, my headless MBP's keyboard settings correctly offers backlight settings and functionality.
