Downloading thumb drive to mac

The instructions I see aren’t helpful. Most say open the drive then download to computer. How?

Double-click the icon of the thumb drive that is on the Mac Desktop.

Then click on and then drag the files from the thumb drive to the Desktop of the Mac or into the folder on the Mac where you'd like those files to remain.

If the icon of the thumb drive doesn't appear on the Desktop when you insert it into the USB port on your computer, make suer that external drives are selected to be shown. Click Finder > Settings... > General and then check the box for external disks under "Show these items on the desktop"
