Compatibility between AirPods 4 with the iPod Nano 7th Gen?

i got the new airpods 4 recently, and they're having problems with my 7th generation ipod nano. they connect just fine, but when i play any music, no sound is played.

I can even pause and restart whatever is playing, I just can't hear the song. The airpods work fine with other devices and the ipod works fine with other airpod models. Someone reported the same issue 2 months ago, and it looks like it's a firmware issue that hasn't been addressed yet. Forgetting the device and reconnecting it didn't work.
