As a work-a-round you can plug in an external monitor and compare your results.

EDIT: Leroy Douglas response was not present when I started composing, and I type slowly. What I wrote is NOT intended to contradict his excellent advice.

You can probably connect a TV set of external display, and use your Mac that way. This will likely allow you to determine whether the problem is in the display ONLY, or deeper in the main logic board.

If the display assembly is the ONLY problem, Repair by replacement on most 15-in models is on the order of US$600. if you have an Apple-owned store available, your appointment for an evaluation and diagnosis is FREE. The quote they provide is FIRM, no surprises later, and warranted for the same problem for 90 days..

as several of us have said, connect a TV set or an external display of almost any description, and you will likely get a picture. Then you can just ignore the built-in display.
