Volume buttons randomly changing ringer in iPhone 16

I recently upgraded to the iphone 16 and am quite frustrated. My volume buttons randomly decided they would only change the ringer (despite working fine for the past few weeks) and I have the “change with buttons” toggle off, so i am unsure as to why this is happening.
