Display resolution and menu bar issues after disconnecting from doc with external monitors

I'm having the issue discussed in this post: Menubar resizes after disconnecting exter… - Apple Community

I have an Macbook M3 Pro running Sonoma 14.7.1. My regular daily set up is two external monitors, with Macbook lid closed. When I disconnect the machine from the monitors to use it with the built-in display, things go haywire. The menu bar is sized incorrectly, with spaces between the items, the icons are all squished and the resolution is way to low, so everything is too large. If I adjust the resolution, the menu bar stays messed up, but then things are too small... I don't have the usual display options that show the different sizing options, just a list of resolutions...

This happens every time I disconnect the monitors and is a big waste of my time trying to fix. I miss the says when Macs "just worked"

Closed display mode is a hack that Apple would love to get rid of, but can't. They have already deleted the article that used to describe how it was supposed to work. Now they promise nothing.

That old article included a caveat that if you have ANY trouble whatsoever:

"You might have to open the display and/or Restart your Mac to get it working properly"

^-- That is the mantra you should carry forward when you change ANYTHING about closed display operation.

The current stable release of Sequoia including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 15.2 — I would start there.
