Can I disable auto-refresh in Apple News?

This happens on every version of the iOS I’ve ever had. I scrolled to the first page to see the news feeds.  I visually scan the titles and see what I’m interested in.

And Bam! The flipping thing updates the news so I lose any track of the article I want to read,  and there is no way to find it again.

Is there any way to configure it to update manually by request or something so I don’t feel like I’ve experienced the old bait and switch every time I look at my News!!!!

Mine does not auto-refresh while I am scrolling through stories, but it will refresh (back to the top story) if I leave a story open and come back to it later. The refreshed feed will usually *not* contain the same stories that I had (and was interested in reading). I have tried both settings of Background App Refresh and there is no difference in behavior. I find this very annoying behavior that should be configurable.

Just to be clear ( picture is worth a thousand words ) I have included a screen shot showing the "news" I am referring to. The articles listed here will update as I am reveiwing them and the stories listed will change. It does not happen everytime and It will only happen once per viewing, but it happens about 5 seconds after the page is displayed and before I can click a story. Yes, I followed your steps and enabled background refresh. It had been off so I had high hopes.

No I rarely turn my phone off and the times I experience this is usually where I have full wifi.

Last night it update the software and this morning first thing, it did it to me again.
