Apple AirPrint is a driverless connection protocol. A high proportion of modern printers intended for Home, SoHo and Business environments now support AirPrint. Check your printer model against this list:

AirPrint provides the ability to print - but for many modern multi-function printers that have other capabilities (such as document scanning, document copy/print and fax) you will require the manufacturer's companion App to access these features from your iPad. Your printer documentation may list the specific Apps available for your Canon printer - but otherwise, simply searching the App Store for "Canon" should find the Apps relevant for your printer (e.g. Canon PRINT).
