Storage Dropped by a Third for No Reason

My iPhone SE3's storage just dropped from close to full (64GB) to about 40GB. It looks like most of the stuff that went missing was from Messages since my top text that used to be something like 8, 10, 12GB - I don't even remember - is now about 100MB. I haven't updated my phone in a while (17.01) and regardless of the stats saying half of my Messages and other apps' data is gone, I don't seem to have lost anything. Before this, I was deleting videos by the dozen to make storage, but storage clearing up like this is a little concerning. Did my phone just finally realize I've sacrificed enough precious memories?

Hello,

  1. Work to clean up your storage pronto. Using a phone when local storage is almost full will lead the types of problems that you are having: How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  2. Note: deleted photos are not necessarily deleted from the phone.  You may have to go to Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted and delete them from there to truly free up storage. Then restart your phone.
  3. Upgrade to iOS 18.
  4. If you've clean up your local storage, and your data is stored in iCloud, everything should come back.

Good luck.
