FPS is used for Video Recording and Display uses Screen Refresh rate

In an iPhone, FPS (frames per second) refers to how many frames are captured per second during video recording. It determines the smoothness and quality of the video, with higher FPS numbers typically providing smoother motion. Common FPS settings for video recording on iPhones are 30 FPS, 60 FPS, and for high-speed recording, 120 FPS or even 240 FPS for slow-motion effects.

On the other hand, refresh rate refers to how often the display updates the image per second, measured in Hz (Hertz). The refresh rate on iPhones typically ranges from 10Hz to 120Hz, depending on the device's capabilities.

For example:

  • iPhone 13 Pro and newer models have a ProMotion display, which dynamically adjusts the refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz based on the activity on the screen, optimizing battery life and performance.
  • Lower refresh rates (like 10Hz) are used for static content to save battery, while higher refresh rates (up to 120Hz) are employed for smoother scrolling, gaming, and other interactive experiences.

Thus, FPS relates to video recording, and refresh rate relates to display updates on the screen.
