iPhone emojis sending immediately instead of being inserted

I did do a search but if it's been addressed I couldn't figure out the right search term.

It's been at least a month since this issue started, I don't recall it being near an update but that would make sense if it was. I have an iPhone 13XR and the software is up to date (18.2.1 at the time of this post).

I use a fair number of emojis in my texts and FB messages and, for some reason, SOME of them are now "sending themselves" automatically instead of just inserting them into my text. 🤦‍♀️

That facepalm emoji, for example, might be sent as a standalone extra-large image with ZERO CONTEXT. The recipient just receives a random emoji and starts responding when I'm still composing my overall message.

I could easily adapt to an "all or nothing" scenario, where ALL emojis are handled the same way (sent immediately OR imbedded in text as in all previous history), but this seems completely random and all the emojis on my keyboard look the same - there's no checkmark or other indication to say "this one will be sent on its own, you can't use it in a sentence/paragraph."

Am I the only one with this issue? And, more importantly, how do I fix it??

Thanks in advance!

I think I found the solution!

What looks like emojis from your recently sent emojis set maybe stickers.

When is disable Stickers in \Settings\General\Keyboards some recently used “emojis” disappeared: the ones that were sent immediately. It works again as it always did 😀

When I select the same pictures again from the permanent emoji collections they reappear in the recently sent emojis set but now act normally as classic in text emojis.

I’ve been seeing the same issue, and I’d clarify that it specifically appears to be sending some emojis as stickers when the expectation is that they’ll be added as a text character in whatever type of text input field we’re actively typing in. That’s why it’s both sending them as large images and sending them immediately when selected. I’ve definitely observed it in Slack, Signal, and Discord; possibly others. I’ve seen it with a few different emojis but the affected ones are inconsistent between apps and over time.

Which app? Apple Messages? Meta Facebook Messenger? Something else?

(If this is happening only with Meta Facebook Messenger, check with Meta support.)

It's also possible that your iPhone display or digitizer hardware might be failing. So-called "ghost touches" can arise then, as well as missed touches. Does this spontaneous action also arise in other apps?

This is happening with me too! I haven't vetted every emoji, but this happens with the sparkle emoji - in fact I can't type it here without it rendering automatically as an image:

I have noticed this in using:

  • signal
  • facebook messenger
  • discord
  • pumble
  • google voice

and here it seems. Interestingly, on Signal, Facebook Messenger, Pumble, and Google Voice the emoji sends automatically, whereas on Discord (and here) it acts as if I have pasted a large image of the emoji.

It seems that I see normal behavior when using the emoji with iMessage or SMS.

Interesting. as per normal it’s nice to find out that it’s not you who’s being an idiot on your phone. It is clear that this is due to a software issue somewhere along the line no fingers been pointed but questions:

1)Can you give a definitive list of which emojis initiate immediate sending and a simple yes or no

2) If yes where is I

3) Is there a solution a present ?

4)will there be one in the future?
