I've done a. restore twice now using DFU mode but still don't get anything on the screen. You can see it light up when I turn mbp on but it's just a blank black screen. Should I give up hope that it's a software issue? I've tried all the suggestions on here for a "black screen" but I'm not having any luck.
You can plug in an external monitor and compare your results...

Sounds like it will most likely be a defective built-in Display Assembly that will need to be repaired (could possibly be a bad Logic Board, but less likely given the behavior you described).
If this happens to be a 2016-2020 Intel Mac with USB-C ports, then I don't recommend spending any money on repairs for multiple reasons. I think the money that would be spent on repairs is better put towards a new laptop.
