You do NOT need an AppleCard to use the Apple Wallet to make purchases.

AppleCard is a credit card issued by Goldman Sachs.

Apple Wallet can securely store a wide variety of debit and credit cards which may be used for purchases. AppleCard is just one of the possible card options; and again it is NOT a requirement use Apple Wallet.

AppleCash is a prepaid debit card “built in” to Apple Wallet onto which you can add money and use for both payments and personal transfers via iMessage.
