Slow Preview performance on large files in Sequoia 15.2 compared to free software
I have a scan of a 4 x 4 foot map.
The file is 1.3 GB, 13,565 x 13,219
The file opens and zooms within seconds in Gimp, the Duck Duck Go browser, and the Mac Graphic.app.
Duck Duck Go is an all or nothing zoom, but the others support various percents, all rapid (within 1 second).
What initiated this was an attempt to view this file with Preview.
Opening with Preview is quick. It fills the window. But the text is too small to read and I need to zoom.
To zoom to where I can read the map labels I click the zoom button in Preview 3 times.
That takes 1:45 (1 minute, 45 seconds).
Panning at that point takes around 12-15 seconds to create an unblurred image.
I tried saving the file as a jpg and got similar or worse Preview results (with quality=100).
Further compression improved times. Q=70 took a minute to zoom the equivalent initial amount.
This seems poor, especially when compared to two pieces of free software.
I don't recall having this issue prior to my latest Sequoia 'upgrade', but it may just be that this file is particularly large.
