Why does my iPhone fall asleep when I'm interacting with notifications on the Lock Screen?

I understand it's supposed to fall asleep after a certain period of inaction, but in my experience it will often fall asleep even when my finger is on the screen and I'm interacting with a notification. This happens quite often and forces me to re-wake it up and dig back into my notifications to recover where I left off

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18

The screen of the iPhone will automatically lock itself after a set period of inactivity, typically around 30 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the device's settings. Simply keeping your finger on the screen for an extended period of time will not prevent it from locking. To keep the screen on, you can either interact with the screen periodically by moving your finger or changing an option in the settings under "Display & Brightness" to adjust the Auto-Lock time or turn it off entirely.

I mentioned I'm aware it falls asleep after a period of inaction, and that I am interacting with notifications when it happens. I'm not sure if you think I'm just pressing my finger on the screen and leaving it there but that's not what I meant (or a normal way to use a phone). It falls asleep while I am scrolling and expanding notifications, while things are changing on the screen. It's very annoying and I doubt I'm the only one but maybe this isn't the right forum for this?
