calendar notification default email

I know it is possible to modify a calendar event to send an email rather that use the default notification. I would like to have email be the default notification, i.e., always send an email 5 minutes before the event. It's hard to believe that this is not possible. I must be doing something wrong.

You have identified a limitation in the setting of Calendar alerts in macOS; it's not an oversight on your part.

An alert for an event can be set only for a duration - or at none. This is within the Calendar app at Settings > Alerts. It can't be pre-set for an email address.

An emailed alert has to be chosen separately for each event (Alert > Custom > Email > [address])
