Moon photo taken in ProRAW Max format gets overexposed when being edited

This has been bothering me since last year when I started taking photos of the moon on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I’m on iOS 18.2.1.

Here’s how to reproduce it:

  1. Open the camera and zoom in to the moon
  2. Use AF lock on the brightest part of the moon
  3. Change exposure to lowest setting
  4. Take photo

After taking the photo, the image looks great, albeit with a bit of noise. Obviously, one would want to edit and enhance the details. But when I tap on Edit, the moon suddenly gets overexposed and no adjustments can recover the photo’s details other than canceling all changes. Opening the same file on Lightroom also overexposed the photo that can’t be recovered.

Is this an issue on my phone‘s camera? Because I’ve seen other people post moon photos with their 15 Pro Max with a different result. As an amateur astrophotographer, being able to use my phone instead of buying a separate equipment would be great.
