Transferring iPhone 8 photos to a drive stick without a computer

I have an iPhone 8, latest iOS update & 64GB storage-Full.

Want to remove from phone but still be able to view actual pictures ( not just list) or even slide show. How can this be done?

Apologies, I didn't check that article to see if it applied to early versions of iOS.

For earlier versions, absent a third-party export utility (if any exists) I'm not aware of a way to export your photos directly to an external storage device. If you have access to a computer, you can sync the photos to that computer:

Unless there's a third-party app that will export your photos directly to an external storage device, in which case how the photos appear and are organized will be up what that app can provide, then to the best of my knowledge there's no way to export directly to a flash drive or other external storage. If you don't have a computer, then you'll need to look for such a third-party app.

If you do have a computer, then keeping your existing organization may be possible. If you sync your iPhone to a Mac, either via cable or through iCloud, then the photos will appear in the Mac's Photos app organized just as they do on your iPhone, allowing of course for the usual differences in features between apps on different platforms. If you sync to a Windows system, then how the photos are organized or even if they are at all will depend on how and to what you sync. Syncing via iCloud will best preserve your organization.

I think I’m not being totally clear with the way I asked my question.

referring to the Apple Users Guide is always a good suggestion, but it doesn’t really help - I want to know the experience of someone who has done it & say whether or not it will work the way I hope.

just moving pictures to free up memory is not the point… I know that if I shift a bunch of photos straight on to an SD stick I will get a useless list of camera roll numbered photos without a clue as to what they are…I want a storage solution that will allow me to look through them (nostalgic memories sake & perhaps select a slideshow to show others.

I want to know (before I spend the money) if I use a thumb drive type stick, will I be able to look through old photos in the same way I can view them in my phone’s camera roll or albums…

been browsing sticks, but I suspect most are geared to android judging by the file types supported (Word, Excel, dpf (none specify pdf) regards other files I might like to remove) I’m sure not will have trouble with jpg or jpeg pics, but I think iPhone 8 saves in another format I can’t remember to check.

I don’t expect general Apple community to know that the latest iOS for iPhone 8 is 16.7.10 - 2 answers so far direct me to users guide for iOS 18. In any case, it is not the doing, but the usability info I’m after.

thanks anyways for trying
