So my computer is an imac about 15 years old. It doesnt let me access anything except for safari, time watch and two other things. The background is gray. Restarting brings me to square one.

If you can not Repair the startup disk or Reinstall the macOS, then the iMac internal drive is dead.
That fifteen (!) year old Mac wants to retire.
You should let it.
