We recently bought a refurbished Apple Watch (series 4 with cellular) for our son. He does not have a phone and we were hoping to set up his watch with a cell provider. Is this possible?

No, unless you have an iPhone and use Family Setup. An Apple Watch is intended to complement an iPhone and can't be set up without one.

Thanks for your responses! I should have been more clear. My husband and I both have iPhones to set up his Apple Watch. We were able to
do that no problem. We tried to connect the watch to the cell service we bought and were told his watch was not compatible. So the problem is not really with the watch itself but with trying to find a compatible cell provider so that he can use it when he’s away from our phones to make calls and send texts.

I see. Indeed some carriers do not support cellular on Apple Watches so you’ll need to find one that does. Best of luck!
