Password prompt misses to register some characters in MacOS Sequoia 15.2

I and a colleague have been getting issues when unlocking our screens in MacOS Sequoia after the 15.2 update, with the password prompt sometimes, around 50% of the time, reporting our passwords being wrong. I first thought the passwords to be corrupted in some way and I made a password reset on my computer by booting into Recovery like some have suggested on this forum. However, in this case that did not help.

Then my colleague discovered something interesting! When typing his password into the password prompt some characters are not always being registered the first time you press the key and thus have to be pressed twice! This turned out to be the case also for me. On my Mac when this happens it is always the same character that has to be pressed twice to register, but in the case of my colleague there have been two different characters with this problem. The problem is not only present in the screen-unlock prompt by the way, it even goes for the password prompt MacOS pops up when logging in to this forum.

Worth noting is that we have zero issues with our keyboards outside of the password prompts! Also, my colleague typically enters his password using the built-in keyboard of his M2 MacBook Air and I do it using a Magic Keyboard (the one before Touch ID) wirelessly connected to my M4 Pro MacBook Pro while in clamshell mode.

Ah, excellent comment! On my own computer I experience this issue both when using the built-in keyboard and when using my external Magic Keyboard with the computer in clamshell mode. The Magic Keyboard can be wirelessly connected or connected using a lightning cable, the issue still persists.

Restart in Safe Mode.

This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts.

The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading.

It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Does the issue present in this mode ?

Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

Forgot to report one of my experiments: My problematic character does NOT have to be at a specific position in the string I type into the password prompt for it to require a double-tap. Meaning, if I type in the problematic character at another position than the correct position in my password, it sometimes still requires a double-tap, but still only that specific character.

Could you tell us what these characters are exactly? That's necessary for anyone to try to duplicate the problem and explore possible causes.

Also confirm that you are both using European ISO type keyboards (with a key between Z and left shift and a vertical enter key)?

(In recent versions of macOS, Safe Mode doesn't turn off everything that can be added.)

Can you elaborate? This is something that I've suspected for a while, given how Apple is moving towards app extensions instead of launchd tasks. But I haven't had the time/opportunity to see a definitive case of a 3rd party system modification running in Safe Mode. Well, I think I have seen it - I just didn't have time to investigate and try to reproduce.

Does this sound like the same problem?

Full disclosure: I know next to nothing about keyboards, changing them, or layouts. I just stick to US English (not Canadian English, which is a different layout, or any French variants, which are different still).

I actually only have "Swedish" under Input sources in Keyboard settings. Sure, all those settings are grayed out if I for example go to a password field. I'm not sure how I should interpret this though.

This is still happening. I have now had all of "asdf" not respond to the first keypress (second ones are fine) on one instance of the password lock screen only.

FWIW, I do use the remote link keyboard/mouse between my Macbooks, but the keypress issue occurs both on the remote keyboard and the local one when the password screen is "broken".

Can someone PLEASE fix this???

Upgraded to Sequoia 15.3 and now the sudo command on the terminal is not accepting my usual password. Worked fine before upgrading, this is a serious issue, any ideas ?

Thanks !

Have you verified your password is not accepted for the same reason as described in this thread, that some characters are in fact not registering when typed?

Upgraded to 15.3.2 and this is still happening. Can someone at Apple please fix this??? How can this be properly escalated?

Same symptoms as before (emptying the input makes the first presses for certain keys not work). I can provide a video of the symptoms if needed. The missing keypresses do extend to even after the unlock screen (in the first input box, but only once).

Hah. Not for long -- the missing first character is back after a few weeks. And now, something new and different! It's skipping the last character, not the first character. I was sure this had to be my own fault, but nope, it's happening repeatedly. Just on the password.

Can't say I like Sequoia much anyway - the moving 3d backgrounds make me nauseous. LOL
