Do i need to back up phone to update?

what happens if i dont back up while updating phone?

i've done updates without backing up phone, matter fact i dont use iCloud, i dont want to backup, im scared of loosing my data/files,

A backup is ALWAYS needed, especially if as you say, “I’m scared of losing my data/files”.

A backup can be made to a computer, or to your iCloud account.

If you’re afraid of losing your data, why in the world do you not want to back it up?
