Exported images from Photos are missing retouched changes.

Images exported from the app Photo are missing changes made with the retouching tool. For example, debris that was removed with the retouching tool becomes visible in the exported jpeg image. Cropping and light adjustments are fine.

Using macOS Monterey 12.7.6, an approximately eight years old Mac Book Air. Half of the disk space used.

Same problem with all Image type and color profile.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.7

If you have the Retouch tool in the Edit mode it should show up in the exported version as long as you're not exporting as an Original version.

Try the following in order as needed:

1 - launch your library with the Oprtion+Command keys held down and repair/rebuild the library. Then test the Retouch tool.

2 - boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Photos Export works properly for me:

You used "File>Export>Export 1 Photo?"

I just looked this up:

Requirements to use Clean Up in Photos - Apple Support

It says:

iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max; any iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later; Mac with M1 or later

It sounds like your MacAir may be too old -- is that right? From this, it seems surprising that you could use Clean Up at all. Weird.

Hi richard

Thank you so much for replying. I missed writing that I export the image as you described. Thanks for looking into the fact that it might be age affecting, but It is strange that the tool still works in that case. I've made several attempts to export and sometimes it has worked to export with all changes. Only on one image, but I haven’t been able to repeat it. I tried something just now, by selecting 'Copy' under the 'Edit' tab, then sharing it via email. The image that comes with the email is identical to the edited one, all changes are there. If I buy a new Mac, I wonder if I can transfer the work documents-images to it and then do the export on the new computer.

I have several hundred images that I’ve edited to remove dirt stains from...

Email often isn't full sized images, so you shouldn't depend on that. Copy from Photos (in Sequoia, at least) yields lower resolution images.

Apparently Photos is remembering the steps you took to edit the picture-- that's a good sign. Photos never actually changes a photograph, it just remembers your edits and applies them to the original when you want to look. You're running Sequoia, so the database is built to remember the edits from Clean Up; your MacAir just can't use them all correctly, I guess.

If you get a Silicon Mac, you'll be blown away by how fast it is!
