I'm sure that you used to be able to add an audio alert to events in calendar as reminders, was really useful but I can no longer work out how to do it. It looks as if it has been done away with. If so please could we get it back

It hasn't been removed.
First, go to Settings>Sounds & Haptics and make sure you like the sound you've chosen for "Calendar Alert.) Then, create a new event in the Calendar app. Tap on "Alert" and set the time:
