Apple Watch not tracking walks

Every now and then my Apple Watch will not count walking as exercise even when I have the fitness app on and the walking option selected. No settings are ever changed, software is up to date and I have tried turning everything off and restarting. Yesterday it tracked walking today it does not. This watch is brand new. What is the deal?

You must be walking fairly quickly for the watch to count it as exercise. You need to get your heart rate up.

If my memory is correct it should be around 3.3 mph.

If for any reason this is not obtainable by you, use "other" workout and the full time will count no matter the speed you walk. It will not log your route (location) or other metrics but it will count as a full workout.
