Did you connect the USB cable to the correct USB-C port on the Mac in DFU Mode?

A Thunderbolt cable cannot be used...usually a Thunderbolt cable has a lightning bolt icon on the connector.

In fact some USB-C cables may only be for charging devices and may not be capable of transmitting data.

Or it could indicate the laptop in DFU Mode has a hardware issue...after all you are trying to solve some problem by putting into DFU Mode in the first place.
