Sync all mails between iPhone and Mac

I have looked - honest - but I cannot find a straightforward way to see all my Mac emails on my iPhone and vice versa. Not just the standard folders but the ones I've set up.

Can this only be done via iCloud?

I have a new iPhone and it's time for me to get this right.
