Compromised Older Macbook Pro

Computer is vintage 2009. running El Capitan 10.11.6 serial number W8***642. Cleanmy mac and Mcafee protections have expired and because of its age and limited functionality, it's not worth buying the protection as the unit is used sparingly on an occasional basis. The functionality is further limited by a warning that I allegedly received from Apple Support warning me that I cannot access icloud and that I should call Apple Support at 8*********8 to clear the problem. I suspect a scam and wonder what can be done to purge the malware from the system without having to purchase additional protection

The request to telephone Apple is a scam. Ignore it.

Download and run the Malwarebytes utility application.  The app was designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it. It’s a popular tool among veteran users here in the Community. Run the app and see if it can identify any malware you may have accidentally installed. The free version is probably all you need at this point to identify and quarantine potential problems.  Remove what is found from the quarantine.
