MacBook Pro m2 Powers On Automatically When Lid Is Closed After Shutdown

Hi,

I’ve been experiencing an issue with my MacBook Pro m2 base model (running macOS Sequoia 15.2). Here’s the situation:

  1. When I shut down my MacBook and fold the display (lid closed), it powers on automatically after a while, even though I expect it to remain off.
  2. If the display is left open (lid up), the MacBook stays shut down as expected.

I’ve tried disabling Power Nap and ensuring no peripherals are connected, but the problem persists.

Additionally, I’d like to know if there’s a way to configure the power button to perform a complete shutdown when pressed, instead of just showing the shutdown dialog.

Do you have any suggestions on how to prevent the MacBook from turning on automatically when the lid is closed and how to set up the power button for instant shutdown?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I think you may need to have this looked at by an Authorized Apple Service Provider (AASP, which can be an Apple Store but doesn't have to be). You are shutting down the Mac completely and waiting for a minute or two before closing the lid, I assume? Selecting Shutdown from the menu item does shut down the Mac totally. Or if it doesn't, it needs service.

But if it does, and it does not come on when the lid is left up, but it does when closed, then something is physically touching one or more of the keyboard keys, since touching any key will turn on the laptop immediately (that is behavior that one cannot turn off). And that should not happen, it may indicate a mechanical adjustment is needed to the keyboard or screen, which is something an ordinary user should not undertake. If your Mac is still under warranty or AppleCare, this service may be free.

One thing that can cause such keyboard malfunctions is a swollen battery underneath, causing the keyboard to very slightly bulge out. You may be able to discern this if you inspect carefully with a flashlight. Or check that the Mac is sitting level on all four of its pads underneath. If the battery is indeed causing this that could pose a safety hazard, it should be addressed immediately. A swelling battery is failing and could leak or even cause a fire.

From your description, it begs the question

Is there an Third Party Keyboard Protector installed and used on this computer

The Tolerance Level between the Closed Lid and the actually keys on the keyboard is so small

The slightest variation in tolerance ( Space ) between the Closed Lid and the Keyboard could activate the computer to turn back ON

Thank you for your detailed response!

I’ve ensured that I’m shutting down the Mac completely using Apple menu > Shut Down and waiting a few minutes before closing the lid. The issue still persists:

  • When the lid is left open, the Mac stays shut down as expected.
  • When the lid is closed, it powers back on automatically after a while.

I’ve inspected the keyboard and found no sticky or overly sensitive keys. Additionally, there’s no visible sign of a swollen battery or uneven gaps when the lid is closed. The MacBook sits level on all four pads.

Could this be related to the lid sensor or another hardware component? Is there any way I can test this further before taking it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider?
