Will apple intelligence work with Chinese Apple ID and US bought iPhone?

Hi, I’m trying to set up Apple Intelligence on my iPhone 16, but nothing happens when I click “Set Up Now.” My device was purchased in the U.S., and I’m currently in the U.S., but I’m using a China mainland Apple ID.

I found on the Apple Support website that Apple Intelligence is not currently supported for China mainland Apple IDs. How to get Apple Intelligence - Apple Support

Will support for China mainland Apple IDs be added in future updates? If so, will Apple Intelligence use ChatGPT or a Chinese AI model in that case?

There is NO opinion being shared with you. Contained in the following Apple Support Article about how to get Apple Intelligence --> How to get Apple Intelligence - Apple Support (CA), is the following:

For China Residents

Apple Intelligence will not currently work for supported devices purchased in China mainland. For supported devices purchased outside of China mainland, Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in China mainland and if your Apple Account Country/Region is also in China mainland.

When Apple Intelligence is available in the EU or China mainland, previously purchased devices that support Apple Intelligence will be able to activate and use it in that region.

Apple has made it pretty clear that if your region is Mainland China, you can't use Apple Intelligence.

If the Apple document isn't enough, it would be advisable for you to contact Apple Support directly. Since you are in the US, you can call Apple at: 800-MY-APPLE

I literally already stated in my second reply that my interpretation of the exact sentence you've marked from the article leads to my opinion that this article makes it pretty clear that I can use it. Attached below:

The article states that it will not currently work if <condition 1> "if you are in China" AND <condition 2> "if your apple account country/region is also in China mainland". Since they are not in China, condition 1 is not satisfied, then condition 1 and condition 2 is not satisfied. Therefore, it should work?

It would be advisable for you to argue why my interpretation is wrong and your interpretation is correct. I would also advise that, both of you just quoted the article and stated your interpretation, and just subsequently said it is obvious and clear, while I also quoted the article, but then made logical arguments, and then stated my interpretation. It would be effective for you to point out what is wrong with the arguments. Since you didn't provide arguments to back up your interpretation, unfortunately I cannot counterargue, but just restate my argument instead.

Why does that indicate "both"?

The article states that it will not currently work if <condition 1> "if you are in China" AND <condition 2> "if your apple account country/region is also in China mainland". Since they are not in China, condition 1 is not satisfied, then condition 1 and condition 2 is not satisfied. Therefore, it should work?
I should clarify myself, if your device is intended for sale within Mainland China, you will currently not have Apple Intelligence.

I am sorry but I don't get it. The author (and I) are facing a problem that is:

  1. Phone's purchased outside of China;
  2. Phone's currently outside of China;
  3. Apple account is Chinese.

Based on the rules stated in the article, we should have Apple Intelligence available. I couldn't understand what they have to do with the "intension for sale within Mainland China".

You are clear about your opinion. Let me be more clear:

  • Your opinion is that: if the apple account is in mainland China, no Apple Intelligence;
  • My interpretation of the article is that: even if the apple account is in mainland China, but if the phone is purchased outside of China, and the phone is not in China, then AI should be available.
    • Because for a phone purchased outside of China to not have AI, both condition 1 and also condition 2 will have to be satisfied. Now, even if condition 2 satisfies, condition 1 does not.

Therefore, I think your opinion contradicts with what the article is saying. It would be so kind of you if you can explain why I am wrong in this regard.

Yeah I get that ChatGPT is not available in China, but I’m currently in the U.S., and the device was purchased in the U.S. I’m wondering if support is determined by the device’s region or the Apple ID’s region.

Both. As stated in the support article you provided, Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in China mainland and if your Apple Account country/region is also in China mainland.

If your device was not purchased in Mainland China, you must not be in Mainland China and your Apple Account country/region must not be set to Mainland China, to use Apple Intelligence.

Since as you state your Apple Account country/region is set to Mainland China, you will not have Apple Intelligence.

I have no intention of arguing anything with you. Apple makes it pretty clear why. If you don't like the answers you've been given by either of us, argue your point with Apple directly.

I'm pretty sure Apple will tell you that you can't use Apple intelligence as long as your iPhone's region is set to China.
