How can I type the symbol # on my MacBook Air?

Go to system settings / keyboard / text input / edit / all input sources and use the minus button at the bottom to remove “British” and make sure the only item on the list is “US” or “ABC”.

If you're set to the UK keyboard, try Option-3.
