Why is my mouse lagging when using a USB hub on MacBook Pro?

I have a new external LG monitor attached to my MacBook pro. I have 2 usb slots on my MacBook, however I needed more to accommodate the mouse, keyboard, external speaker and external camera. So, we bought an Anker 4 port usb 3.0 data hub. When I plug in the data hub, the mouse stops working properly - it freezes, it lags, it disappears. I have tried powering down the computer then back up. I have changed the speed of the mouse tracking. Nothing works so far. Can anyone offer suggestions?

Thanks Jan! I spent some more time reading about the hub (which is not powered) and it is possible that its frequency is interfering with the frequency of the wireless mouse. I have ordered a usb extension cord to provide some distance between the hub and the usb of the mouse. If that does not address the issue, I may need a wired mouse. I will also look at the power needs of the other connected devices.
