Depending on the state laws where you live the funds will be transferred to your states unclaimed funds account. The time before transfer varies by state and is generally between 6 and 24 months. Once deposited in your state’s account, you can submit a claim form to your state and recover the funds.

Banks are prevented from disclosing the details and reasons for closing your account because of the Bank Secrecy Act and the Patriot Act.

Please review the support article I linked to below.

It is Congress the enacted the law years ago, so that is how it is legal. While there is quite a bit of information you can find out about the Bank Secrecy Act, SAR's, and the Patriots Act that details the provisions, I can give you one as a starting point with some highlights .

  • The institution does not need proof that a crime has occurred.
  • The client is not notified that a SAR has been filed regarding their account.
  • Disclosure to the customer, or failure to file a SAR, can result in very severe penalties for both individuals and institutions.

Sorry, but we are unable to determine what the cause of the problem is, but the above article does show some common triggers. Others include such things as using another persons SS# or transactions with another party that is part of an investigation. Since these are Cash transactions, the Government is concerned about Money Laundering or falsifying any information provided when the account was opened. Some users have found their accounts to be closed when they had used their parent's information thinking that will help them with verification needed for an Apple Cash card, and of course this is considered fraud. I would also suggest reading the Terms of Use for the Apple Card that was included in Jeff Donald's post.

In my experience, it’s legal because that’s what federal banking regulations instruct the bank to do. Banks don’t make these decisions arbitrarily. There are investigations and in some cases it involves federal agencies that investigate financial matters. The Bank Secrecy Act literally prevents banks from discussing the matter with you.

Part of the issue may involve where some of the funds came from. If any of the funds were transferred to you, by someone that obtained the funds in a questionable way, it involves you financially in the activities. I’m being deliberately vague, because the details you’ve presented are vague, but accurate for the limited information I have. I’m happy to provide the terms and conditions and contact information for Apple and Green Dot Bank. Apple will have less information than Green Dot, because they are not involved at all. Green Dot is prevent from disclosing information to you, as well as Apple.

You can dispute anything you want. But in that won’t change a thing in the largest percentage of cases. But, I’m not a lawyer and I don’t give legal advice.
