Apple recommends NOT letting the battery go below 20%, as it can age your battery faster. But when your battery does dip that low, the battery indicator turns red, which should be enough of a notification that you need to charge your battery. Putting in Low Power mode is up to you and really should only be used if you are in a location where you cannot charge your phone, but you need to reduce background services to conserve enough charge to keep your phone operational.
