Macbook Pro 2020 Intel stuck in Internet Recovery with No Startup Disk

I have a 2020 Intel i5 Macbook Pro w/ 2 thunderbolt ports.

  • It starts up in macos recovery every time
  • If I hold option to select a startup disk, the only thing there is internet recovery- no startup disk to select
  • When I boot into recovery, it says “an update is required to use this startup disk”
  • When I click “update”, i get into this infinite cycle of “An error occurred while installing the update”.
  • If I go to the home page of recovery to install macos, a startup disk shows up, but after trying to install, it says “An error occurred”.

So to sum the problems up, the mac is not starting up properly, is not updating properly, and is not installing macos properly. I’ve tried booting it in the different recovery modes, resetting the SOC and PRAM, everything- and nothing worked.

This mac has no applecare and when i took it to apple, they tried to charge $650 for a now 5 yr old laptop. Nope!

if you have another Mac running at least 10.15.6, you may be able to do a DFU Revive or Restore. I am surprised that if you internal drive is still good, thew genius and guys did not suggest this.
