Apple Mail is stuck "indexing"

I have no idea why I continue using Apple software given Apple's clear disdain for fixing bugs in their software. In any event, Mac Mail has been unusable for me for the past 24 hours. It's stuck indefinitely "indexing". No Mail filters work, the VIP section doesn't ever populate, etc. Reading these forums, people have been talking about this bug for over a year without any response or solution. I have tried a dozen different things to fix this, nothing works.
