Excessive Network Usage by System Process on MacBook
Dear Apple Support Team,
I am writing to report an unusual issue that I have recently observed on my MacBook. There is a system process called "idleassetd" that is consuming a significant amount of internet bandwidth without any apparent reason or user-initiated activity. This activity was noticed during minimal usage of the device, with no other high-load processes running.
Details of the issue:
- Process Name: idleassetd
- System Version: macOS Sequoia 15.2
- MacBook Model: M1, 2020
- Memory: 8 GB
- User Account: Root
Such a high level of network activity from a system process seems abnormal and raises concerns about potential privacy or security risks. I have attached screenshots from the Activity Monitor for your reference, highlighting the network activity and CPU usage of this process. The screenshots were taken on January 23, 2025, to capture the system behavior at the time of observation.
Additionally, the "idleassetd" process continues to download data even during minimal user activity and with no applications running. This negatively impacts the internet speed and makes it difficult to use other applications, especially those relying on data transfer.
I would like to clarify the following:
1. What is the purpose of the "idleassetd" process? Is such network activity normal behavior?
2. What data is being downloaded or transmitted through this process?
3. Are there known methods to limit its activity or monitor the data being transmitted?
4. Could this be related to a system or configuration error?
5. What actions can you recommend to minimize network load and prevent this issue from recurring?
Thank you for your assistance. Please let me know if you need additional details or logs to further investigate this matter.
Looking forward to your response.
