Apple TV not marking shows as watched even after tvOS 18.2.1

After tvOS 18, both my Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K 2nd gen, stopped marking shows from 3rd party apps as watched. After updating both models to 18.2.1, my 4K model is now working but my older HD model is still not. Upon further investigation, I noticed that the section “Settings -> Apps -> TV -> Connected to TV” is present in the 4K model but entirely missing in the HD model.

I tried a full device reset and update but that did not fix the issue.

I called Apple Support and they could not tell me if the removal of this feature was intentional or not. She told me that since the HD model is more than 7 years old, she could only recommend that I buy a new one.

I’d like to know if anyone else is still experiencing this or has any better information on whether the removal of this feature is intentional or not.

Actually, it worked for a while after installing the latest update but after a couple of days, it stopped working and the “Connected to TV” section is missing again. Very strange.

It seems since TvOS 18, this feature doesn't work right. As you said, for the 4k Apple TV models, it seems correct in TvOS 18.2.1, but is ongoing in the regular HD models, including the lack of menu items in the settings to connect third-party apps to the Apple TV app and third-party content not updating and/or displaying all available providers appropriately in the Continue Watching feature of the Apple TV app.

This likely is either a bug or other side effect of something implemented for TvOS 18. It's not likely to be intentional because the Continue Watching feature itself is still available on regular HD Apple TV models. Signing out of your Apple ID and signing back in doesn't help nor does resetting the Apple TV to the latest TvOS (not to be confused with simply updating the Apple TV software). The regular Apple TV HD model has different hardware from the 4k model, and as such also has a different feature set; because of this, sometimes bugs may be fixed for one of the models before the other.

Like most software companies, Apple will not comment on this (or any) bug or any kind of timeline for its correction. Instead, it will either appear fixed in some future TvOS release or it will not, and there is no other official information about it.
