How do you upgrade iPhone 7 iOS to iOS 16

If you want to run iOS 16, you will need an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X.

But, since you will be looking for a new phone, it would make much more sense to go with a newer model that will run iOS 17 and iOS 18.

My recommendation would be an iPhone 15 Plus or higher model, so updates will be available for the next 7-8 years.

Sorry, but you don’t.

An iPhone 7 can only run up to iOS15.

If you need the capabilities provided by a newer iOS …

… you’ll also need a newer phone on which the more capable iOS can run.

The only way to do that is to trade it in for a new phone or sell it and use the money to buy a newer phone.
