Contact Carrier to Deactivate SIM Card Message

I traded in my IPhone 14 for a 15 last April. I just discovered that my old iPhone 14 is still on my Apple account. I deleted it just now and received this message…

“Contact Carrier to Deactivate

SIM Card

To prevent this iPhone from receiving text messages and phone calls, contact your carrier to deactivate your SIM card.”

Has my old IPhone been active this entire time? Has it been mirroring my phone?

I’ve have never had this issue during previous trade ins.
