Help Creating Simple Trailer Templates in Motion That Have Drop Zones For Video

I am brand new to video editing and started making trailers in iMovie. It worked great, but now I want some customization with the templates so I purchased final cut pro and motion.

I am trying to create a very simple template in motion using drop clips. Basically, I want to have about 10 drop clips (about 10 seconds long) play in succession, featuring highlights of a longer video clip I have in FCP (about 20 min long). I would like to just click the area of the main clip that I want and have that 10 second section flow into drop zone one, then another area of the video in drop zone 2, and so on (like how making a trailer in iMovie works).

I've built out the template below. When I publish it to FCP and insert the drop clips, it just plays 1 second of each drop clip extremely fast and then ends. What am I doing wrong? my goal here is to create a simple template to test out the functionality, and then add fancier elements as I become more savvy over time. Only concerned with the simple template right now. Can anyone help me?

Your template is ten seconds long but the part with the drop zones is about 1 second long.

When you drag a template to the FCP timeline it stretches or shrinks to match the duration you set there. So for example if you make it ten seconds (the same as in the Motion) it will play for ten seconds - meaning that the ten clips will play for about 1 tenth of a second each. If you were to extend in FCP timeline to 20 seconds, then the part with the drop zones would play for just over 2 seconds, so each drop zone would play for about 2/10 of a second, and so on.

You could simply make the project be 100 seconds long and each drop zone be 10 seconds and then make it 100 seconds long in FCP as well.

(I am not sure that using drop zones is the way to go in this case, but we can dwell on that later)

Ok I will definitely try that. Just had a breakthrough literally seconds before this post where I just made an an intro with one drop scene and added it 10x to my project which is getting me closer to where I want to be.

how would you recommend going about this venture? Totally noob here

Luis— does FCP still play drop zone media from the beginning of the template? By that I mean: if you create a template and Start a Drop Zone halfway through the template, when the template is published and media added to the dropzone, even though the drop zone does not appear until the halfway mark the media has been playing from the beginning of the template? [This would have a huge influence on the OP's project.]
