opened my Mac and the screen shower scam and a number to
call. Couldn’t get into my computer and was scammed. How can I protect myself or my computer from
this happening again?

Assuming this message was presented as a popup while using the Internet, simply force quit your browser, then restart your browser while holding the shift key. If you divulged financial information at that 1-800 number, contact your bank immediately to report the scam. If you allowed the criminals at that number to access your computer, change every password you have ever used on that computer.

No virus protection is needed. Just keep your Mac software up to date.
