My iPad Pro can only be charged while connected to my MacBook

My iPad Pro is no longer charging with any of the chargers that previously worked, and I am only able to charge it when I connect it using one specific cable to my MacBook.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 18

Presumably you are attempting to charge your iPad with a USB-C Power Adapter (preferably Apple) rated at 20W or greater. Have you tried using a different USB-C charging cable? A USB-C cable contains active electronic components which can fail.

If you are unable to charge from a USB-C Power Adapter - but are able to charge from your Mac's USB port - this might suggest a fault with the iPad's USB-C controller that is (in part) responsible for charging; USB-C uses USB PD (Power Delivery), this being an active protocol that mutually negotiates charging voltage and current between the power source and the device being charged.

If you have substituted both your USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C cable and been unsuccessful in resolving the issue, begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad, Power Adapter and charging cable - and you can explore your available options:
