Line outs from interface to digital in on iPhone isn’t working properly

I’m at a loss as to why this is happening.

I’m running out from a stereo line-out on my Apogee Quartet (a NICE, HIGH-END audio interface) into a 1/8” stereo to USB-C adapter into my iPhone 16.

The signal IS being picked up by iPhone but it sounds terrible dude. I’m at a loss as to why. It sounds muffled and is picking up maybe 1/10th of the actual frequency spectrum at best.

Things I’ve tried:

-Using a mono-summer from Audio-Technica between the cables (turns the stereo signal into mono; at first I thought it might’ve been some weird phase issue - obviously this did not work)

-Switching consumer line out (-10dB) to pro line out (+4dB); again did not work

-turning signal volume up and down on interface (again, didn’t work)

-Running signal through iRig 2 before USB-C converter cable (and again, didn’t work)

I’m at a loss here. I know other people have experienced this issue, as I’ve seen on Reddit, etc..

Has anyone figured out how to solve this issue?

What I’m trying to do: film short form content with my iPhone camera (the hooks of the beats and music I make) to put on Instagram. I want to use the actual output of my high end audio interface as the sound source of the video (not the ambient sound of my phone picking up the speakers in the room).

Someone please give me some suggestions here. I’m seriously dumbfounded right now. Linked to a video I uploaded to YouTube as an example of how it sounds.

This has nothing to do with Apogee's product. They don't make their audio outputs any differently than the standard practices of the audio industry have been for generations. This is far more likely to do with either the cable that is converting the signal to USB-C or with the way Apple configured the USB port at the bottom of the phone itself, and I know this because other people, who've tried to do this same thing, but with different equipment, are also having the same problem. Again, this has nothing to do with the outputs on the Apogee interface. If I plug a standard set of studio monitors into the exact same outputs, I can perfectly good, clean sound.
