Unable to download or mount DMG files on iMac

My mac hard drive was recently corrupted so I did a hard reset on it and updated it to the latest software applicable - monterey 12.7.4

I am trying to download google chrome or firefox, but i cannot seem to mount any of the dmg files. they won't download. I double click them, and for a moment or two it says verifying but after that, it just disappears.

I heard this is an issue with the software and a bug with monterey os and tried to read some threads to fix this but couldn't find a workaround. Would appreciate any help.

Diskimagemounter is set as the default application to open the dmgs..

Do some troubleshooting voodoo. Reset SMC and RAM, safe-boot, check the internal disk from the list bottom to up in Recovery mode with Disk Utility 1st Aid, try under a dummy new user account.

If that fails, backup, make a bootable macOS installer and boot to it, erase, install, restore only user data files. Don't install any 3rd party virus apps, or "cleaners".

Boot into Restore mode,CMD+r keys...

Look at top of screen for Utilities menu...

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Also, check "/Volumes" in the Finder just in case the process just did not automatically pop-up a new Finder window to show the mounted DMG.
