Lots of first time Mac users make the mistake of buying the cheapest, most resource-limited option, perhaps intending them to be used for only light-duty purposes like email and occasional web surfing. They soon find out how much they like them. A couple years later find out they have reached their storage capacity limit, can't upgrade them, or some other limitation becomes apparent that prevents them from doing much more than they had originally imagined.
Don't be one of them. Buy as much memory and storage as you can afford, but (in my opinion) absolutely positively no less than 16 GB and 512 GB respectively.

Define "affordable". What may be affordable for me, may not be affordable for you.
Yes a MacBook Air, the forum you posted this in, is the entry level Mac Laptop.
What exactly will you be doing with it?
What kind of budget do you have?
Are you planning on buying new, refurbished or used?
Are you in the US?
I agree with John about RAM and storage. Though Apple no longer sells anything with less than 16GB of RAM. I'd bump it up to 24GB though, and yes 512GB of storage.
Outside of that, and budget permitting, you will need to decide on screen size and CPU. I'd say the regular M3 should be more than adequate for most tasks out there.

What do you have in mind for productivity?
Leading Edge Use: (XCode app development, Apple Intelligence, etc)
The M3 MacbookAir with 24GB RAM and a 512GB SSD is a good starting point. Maybe get 1TB+ SSD if you expect to do a lot of content creation.
Typical iWork/iLife use: (Home office work, vacation photo editing, internet, email, tax software, etc)
The baseline M2 Macbook Air with 16GB RAM is quite capable, although the 256GB SSD may be limiting. I would suggest looking for 512GB+ SSD configurations, especially if you expect to store a large photo library or similar. A refurbished/clearance M1 Macbook Air could also work if you find one cheap assuming it has at least 16GB RAM.
Avoid anything with only 8GB RAM. Apple made 16GB standard last fall but some 3rd party resellers still carry old stock.

What do you want to do with the laptop?
Do you think you will want to use external displays with it when you are at home, or work? If so, how many?
What are your preferences as far as screen size vs portability?
I can make some offhand recommendations – like getting a Mac laptop that has
even if that means custom-ordering one, but these are just basics. If you can answer some questions about your intended use of a laptop, we can guide you much better.
Re: “… [don’t] make the mistake of buying the cheapest, most resource-limited option …”
A big +1
Apple products are generally very well made, and if properly cared-for will serve you for a long time.
But if you find yourself running out of resources after 2 years … you’ll fully understand the term “False Economy.”
What is your budget?
What is your intended usage? (Simple web/email/social media, gaming, video/image editing, programming, etc?)
How portable does it need to be?
What other items would you need? (Printer? External monitor? External drives?)
You can get a new 13" M2 MacBook Air for ~$799 or drop $4000 on a loaded M4 MacBook Pro.
If you have an Apple Store near you, drop in and ask an employee to show you some of the different models they have.
