FCP shows missing audio in compound clip that seems to be there

I have a Compound Clip that has red where the audio should be. When I go into the compound clip, the audio is there (blue) and so are the waveforms. It's a Multicam clip in there, so I go into the Multicam clip and the audio and waveforms are there as well.

This is what I see in the browser:

Compound Clip opened in Timeline:

Multicam Clip:

Obviously I can't export because FCP says there is media missing. I've already relinked the original clip and it's still shows as missing. What else can I look for? I'm running 10.8.1 on a 16" M1 Max MBP and macOS 14.2.1.

Thanks,

Jonathan

If you drop the compound in a project and then break it apart (Shift+Cmd+G) to show the multicam and b-roll, is the audio there?

Whenever FCP does something inexplicable, an easy thing to do is reset the Preferences/Settings. Hold option and command while launching FCP and choose Delete. FCP will open the default Untitled library. Reconfigure the Settings/Preferences the way you like (turn off background rendering, etc.), reopen the library you were working on and see if the behavior has changed.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for taking a look at it. The original clip is 4K. I make a 1080 multicam so I can easily switch angles between a wide shot and a punched-in closeup. I don’t want to double the audio so I simply turn it off on the bottom clip (the closeup). I could have disabled the audio of the closeup it in the compound clip inspector instead…same goal. Picture and sound play properly in the compound clip.
