So, what's the model of your Mac? Does it have a SD card drop built into it?

Verify the Connection:

First off, see if the reader are is even seen: 

1. Hold Down: the Option key
2. Click: the Apple menu
3. Choose: System Information or System Report
4. Select: Card Reader and USB from the list on the left
5. Look For: the cards and the reader

Then it was likely a bug or misconfiguration in the macOS.

Back Up your Mac:  Both before and after making any major changes to your Mac (ie macOS upgrade or user account creation), be certain you Create a Time Machine Backup of your Mac, so that way you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reconfiguration.
