"Your System Has Run Out Of Application Memory" - part 2

Hello,

A while back I posed a question about the above titled message my system was repeatedly showing. I was learning to live with it when it would appear by closing some apps when it happened. A bit annoying, but doable. The recent OS update to 15.3 Sequoia has seemed to fix that. About 24 hours into the update and no reoccurring of that message and the system seems to hold at plenty of memory. When that message was appearing, indeed the system memory was down into the single digits. Now, after the update, it's well into double digits. Having the same apps running most of the time. Both prior to that error message appearing and now after the update. I'm hoping it continues.

The two causes of this are apps that use a whole lot of virtual memory, and configurations with insufficient free storage. Or a combination.

It’s possible some app you’re running is bloated, or leaking, or triggering a leak somewhere in macOS. Or that your boot device is full. Google apps tend to consume resources for no clear reason for instance, and are among the usual suspects. Chrome and most any other web browser with lots of open tabs too, as all of those tabs can consume resources.

Check your free storage:

Apple > About This Mac > Storage

You’ll want 5 to 10 GB free, minimally.

Check your free memory:

Launch Activity Monitor app from Applications > Utilities, then select View > All Processes > Memory

What’s appropriate usage varies by app and configuration, but the top apps shown are the ones using the most. But it’s also possible to have huge herds of small processes too, each consuming a little of the resources.
